Kawana Touch Association History

Kawana Touch Association was formerly Maroochy Touch Association. In the late 1990s the committee saw the move to larger facilities to be able to cater for more teams and expand the competition. At that stage there was a small competition at the Kawana sports grounds. Negotiations with members of the existing Kawana competition and the Caloundra City Council management of facility proceeded favourably, and Maroochy Touch Association registered a change of name to Kawana Touch Association.

Since the move, the competition has expanded to the largest on the Sunshine Coast. We have strong links with local schools, and offer school based competitions for both primary and high schools.

We are proud of our achievements with player pathways to representative level. Kawana Touch Association has five players who have achieved the pinnacle of their sport by being selected in Open Australian Teams. All five of these players began their touch careers at the original Maroochy Touch Association. These players are the first open players from the Sunshine Coast region to represent Australia in open men' or women' teams. Players from Kawana Touch Association have had representative honours in the Australian under 18 and under 16 men's and women's teams. There have also been representative in under 20, open, over 30, over 35, over 40 and over 50 Queensland State teams.

Kawana Touch Association, in conjunction with Stockland Park and Queensland Touch Association hosted the Queensland State Championships in 2003. Stockland Park was also chosen as the venue for the recent Junior World Cup. This is evidence of the quality of the venue and ability of the management to host international events.
